In the classic film Say Anything, actor John Cusack, in an act of desperation, chooses to stand under his lover’s window with a boom box to show her his adoration and affection to her. While not an idealistic way of being a romantic in real life, the scene became a symbolic show of youthful love and would go on to become one of the most memorable scenes in film history.
This show of love has been recreated in Lul Bear’s new visual “Baby Come Back,” with a visual parallel that shows an African American modern-day take on the classic scene. After getting into some trouble for some less-than-honorable actions, Lul Bear decides that he wants to make things work with his girl. So by purchasing a boom box from a local store, he sets his plan in motion. The iconic scene is on full display as he holds the bear up at the visual’s climax.
On the vocal side, the track largely succeeds due to its somber melody and LulBear’s vocals. They’re earnest and unflinching, much like the video itself.
